A TRIBUTE TO MRS. ROSE SHERMAN-BARTIE
AT THE TIME OF HER GOING HOME TO BE WITH THE LORD by
T. Eugene Oody, Former Missionary Principal
Ricks Institute, Monrovia, Liberia, during the period from 1966 to 1979
First of all let me express mine and Mrs. Oody’s sincere sympathy
To the Sherman-Bartie family we learned to love so well
During the time we were at Ricks Institute in Liberia
Serving as Southern Baptist missionaries with God’s great message to tell.
To all the relatives and many, many friends of Mrs. Rose Sherman-Bartie
Let me extend, from a somewhat saddened heart, my profound condolences
And ask that God’s ever sustaining love and grace divine
Be with each and everyone as you hold in your hearts fond remembrances.
Yes, remembrances of this dear loved one
Whom our dear heavenly Father God has seen fit to take
To make up His beautiful flower bed inside heaven’s portals
Where with many of those saints gone before her a glorious place will make.
Mrs. Oody and I have the fondest memories
Of this dear mother and special friend
When she served so faithfully on the Ricks Institute campus
Sometimes working hard from dawn until the day’s end.
The students at the Ricks Institute dining hall
Where Mrs. Rose worked so diligently and with the greatest skill
Will forever be grateful and will cherish those kind expressions
Shown to them in getting nourishing food their hungry bodies to fill.
I remember well the pleasant smile that she had
Every time our paths would cross on the campus there
And she always took time to make conversation
Be it a rainy day or when the weather was fair.
I remember Connie and Boyma
And how their mother cared so much for them
Making sure they were living comfortably
And a good education was a prioritized item.
So let me say in closing to Connie and Boyma,
Do not grieve and mourn for long
Because your mother is now at rest in God’s good Heaven
Where she now sings the angelic song.
Yes, I know our hearts are somehow saddened
But let’s remember that death is only a gateway
To that place prepared for all God’s children
Who will join that heavenly hosts some day.
So, to the family, friends and loved ones,
Who have come to this memorial service today
Why not celebrate the passing of this dear loved one
Whose life has been a blessing to many along the way.
Let me leave with you a verse of Scripture
That I think will help you to cope
With the losing of your dear loved one
And will give you a blessed hope.
And we know that all things work together for good to them that
Love God, and to them who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
